YPEC AEROPELICAN AIRPORT
Continuing my travels around Australia - my next stop is YPEC AEROPELICAN AIRPORT, one of a series of add ons made by ORBX, part of its AU series.

this time, I flew a Captain Sim C-130E Hercules, not the easiest plane to land in such a small airport, to find out if I made it out of there in one piece - click on the banner or the Read More link.

YPEC Aeropelican is easy to miss, it is a tiny airport lost in the middle of a city, and at first I didn’t know what I was doing there, just a few houses and hangars, Aeropelican is hardly an Airport, it is a glorified landing strip, and a short one at that - with a highway in one side and a lake on the other, which makes for careful landings, as you might hit a truck or a car at the end of it if you don’t carefully align your aircraft.

On a masochistic streak, I decided to fly the C-130E Hercules in a short go around – not the wisest choice if you are not used to the Hercules.

Aeropelican is quite close to Sidney, in New South Wales - I arrived there in 45 minutes after taking off from Coff's Harbour up north.

Aeropelican and the region around it was faithfully rendered, up to the quality one came to expect from ORBX, comparing it with the Google Maps version, at first you don’t know which is the real one.

All around the Airport there is a lot to see – it is not just the Aeropelican that was rendered in this add on.

The C-130E Hercules is anything but weak, it is a powerful beast - to carefully navigate the narrow space to reach the runway I set to idle the outer engines , otherwise it is hard to control as it wants to move by itself and you are constantly hitting the brakes while at the same time setting up all the things you need to, as your co-pilot is nowhere to be found.

it is a rainy day this day - ASA rendered, it got worse later on, but for this short go around, it was OK

as luck would have it, I had to follow a Cessna to reach the runway, and wait for it to take off.

not much space to spare - but Hercules is surprisingly agile and easy to control as you don’t want to hit any trees.

Moved the throttles to max - this after setting the flaps to the takeoff position – and all the while pressing the brakes as I didn’t want to move an inch

the C-130E was set at 40% fuel, no payload, so it jumped in the air, don't try this with 100% fuel and payload if you want to land back ...

absolutely an easy take off - no reason to worry, I could have done it the easy way and simply gained power as I accelerated, if only I knew it beforehand …

now for the hard part, landing the Hercules …

I aligned it to the runway, rather well if I may say so myself - flaps still at T-O position, speed about 120 knots …

… and another Cessna ready for take off ...

I chose a flat approach because I wanted to touch the runway as soon as possible - I knew I didn't have much room to spare ... and no time for screenshots …

I didn't need to resort to anything other than brakes - no need to set flaps at landing either, but it was a bit too close for comfort

reverse engines ...

… set to idle outer engines …

and just manage the Hercules - he really is easy to park.

Aeropelican Airport is in a very interesting place, and challenging to land (in a Hercules) and its surrounding worthy to explore , another great add on from ORBX.

... I crashed twice trying to land - 3rd time lucky. ;-)

REX, FEX, ASA, ORBX AU GOLD REGION and Captain Sim C-130E for FSX were used in this article.

Install was very easy - using an EXE, Alacrity PC was used to improve FPS, which were in the 15 FPS range, @ 1600x1200, AA x4, AF x2 - FSX-A set at high settings, set up according to the .PDF that comes with this add on.

The Captain Sim C-130E Hercules uses a lot of the CPU - even so the FPS were more than acceptable.

as always, we do not profit from any sales of anything we review.
