" The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics will release their next Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) aircraft in 2012: the legendary P-51D Mustang. The Mustang was among the best and most well-known fighters used by the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Possessing excellent range and manoeuvrability, the P-51 operated primarily as a long-range escort fighter and also as a ground attack fighter-bomber with bombs, rockets, and machine guns. The Mustang served in nearly every combat zone during WWII, and later fought in the Korean War.
The DCS: P-51D Mustang will be modelled at the same exacting detail as the existing Ka-50 Black Shark and A-10C Warthog Digital Combat Simulation (DCS) aircraft and it will be online compatible with them. Based on many years of restoring, flying and maintaining Mustangs, The Fighter Collection brings its unique ability to portray this aircraft in its full glory.

The P-51D will be the first aircraft in the Flying Legends series that focuses on historical aircraft that have set benchmarks in combat aviation. This series of simulations demonstrates the broad scope of DCS simulation environment and its ability to introduce aircraft from all eras into a common simulation environment. While the P-51D started as an internal technology demonstration, it has evolved into an independent product that adds an all new dimension to the DCS universe. The development of the P-51D and other Flying Legends series aircraft definitely does not preclude the continued development of modern aircraft.
"

More details of DCS: P-51D Mustang will be made available closer to product release later this year.

Good luck competing with FSX or Prepar3D's world-wide maps and payware like this:

Someone pointed out the video above is of the Flight Simulator 2004 version, and an FSX version of the P51-D has been released, with on-going improvements like these:

My question is what do they even intend to get out of this? I mean seriously... a P-51 in a game specialized for modern fighter aircraft. This isn't FSX. :icon_rolleyes:

However, the only specific standout that I see in this is modding. We will finally have a PROP aircraft flight model to mess with.

I sure hope this is just going to be an add-on and not another full blown product. They already broke and fixed their own problems 11 times with A-10C. :icon_rolleyes:

So, I guess this announcement isn't really surprising but...

What are we going to do with it? Is ED going to put in other WWII era fighters? WWII Era tanks and ground units? WWII Era scenery? I mean we're going to be flying 70 year old fighter around a map populated by 1970's Soviet Bloc architecture, modern air bases etc. or are they going to roll it back to early Soviet/Imperial buildings? How long would that take? Is that going distract from DCS: Fastjet or FC3? Nevada? any-map-that-is-not-the-Caucasuses?

Also, the historical side of me has to chime in. Was the P-51 even used in Transcaucasia during the War? I mean, the furthest ol' Jerry got south was Mt. Elbrus, and that lasted like all of a week, then Stalingrad. I don't think the D model even existed at that point in the war, and did we even Lend lease it when it did? Does this mean a new map? (I'm sure it doesn't :icon_rolleyes: ), and how long would that take, I mean Nevada still isn't out.

I could argue a hypothetical around the Korean War era when Stalin got all possessive of the Bosporus and the US sent in the USS Midway goes hot, and NATO invades the heck out of the G.S.S.R but by then the P-51 was second fiddle to a whole host of other jets.

Forgive me if this seems harsh, but I've been waiting for one thing from ED for like four or five years now, an american or European jet with a decent cockpit that can exceed 500mph and drop bombs. I get restless when that gets, or seems like it might get delayed.
They're called Missiles not Hittles.

It makes no sense to me to plop a P-51D in a Lock On scenario - it would make no sense at all

by the way, ED representatives are already talking of matching A2A quality with their first release ...

And then what... Fly in formation with a Warthog over the SAME microscopic patch of Western Russia? :icon_dizzy: And Nevada for $20 more.

All of this does make me wonder if the TacPack delay and Prepar3D's rise might at all be connected. Heck, I gotta find hope somewhere.
