roll inverted to target (mud moving)

    Postby coolts » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:49 am

    Hey guys

I have been reading the excellent “Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War”

And now “Strike Eagle: Flying the F-15E in the Gulf War”

    And have a query.

Why do pilots, when wanting to get their pippers on ground targets roll inverted, pull G’s to target then roll again? wouldn’t it be quicker to push negative G’s? Is this due to the whole low altitude flying axiom of, “at low alt, positive G’s, you die”? Or is there a technical reason?

    The answer is very simple.
Human body responds way worse to negative G, and it's -G tolerance is way lower than the +G, plus all your items (maps, notices, etc.) in the cockpit will immadietly lift off and jump up in your face :D if they weren't fixed to somewhere.

A well built and properly trained pilot (fighter + acrobatics aswell) can bear around +9Gs (in some extrem & emergency situations, such as dogfighting or evading manouvers above that too + flying aviation acrobatics requires sometimes even more +G, like max 11-13G). But from a negative G the limit for human beings is about -2/-3, during which a huge amount of blood flows (the infamous red-out occures) to the brain which may result in eye or brain damage (eg: stroke) if the individual is too long under -G load.

Ah, roll on the first sim with artificial gravity trousers™ so you can really experience the G's. (And not the string kind).
