Su 27 Intercept: An FC3 Instant Action Mission

23 May 2015
Posted by Ironhand In: LockOnFiles Portal Articles

The mission itself is short, simple, and not overly difficult mission. It has you and your wingman challenged by several aircraft groups. Although you don't realize it when you start "Su-27 Intercept" for the first time, fuel management is critical if you don't also want to practice deadstick landings. I nearly got to have that practice.

The developers of DCSW posted some updates about where they stand in developing new add ons as well as DCSW v2/Edge:

- DCS World 2 and Edge not yet near a public release, in alpha or otherwise, work continues. A Video link was provided :

- DCS: Nevada Test and Training Map is not yet finished - but is moving closer to Alpha.

- DCS: P-47D Thunderbolt & Spitfire work continues but "there is nothing new to show this month" and no news at all on the Normandy map.

- DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Air to Ground radar work continues.

- DCS: Hormuz Map "our map team is making steady progress on the Strait of Hormuz Map- no release date yet.

- DCS: L-39 Albatros "The next aircraft module to be released by Eagle Dynamics will be the L-39 Albatros"

To sum it up - new modules and maps are still being worked on and the developer of DCSW does not have yet any information as to when they will be released, certainly not before the next newsletter.

Tremendous flying today at the Abu Dhabi race course, but none could beat Frippe's domination of the track. Coming into the race with the fastest qualifying time of a blistering 1:48.66. He followed it up with crushing times of 1:50.8 / 1:51.41 / 1:50.87 and 1:50.82 to clinch the title for the day.
Congratulations Frippe! Winner of the DCS:Fw 190 provided by Hitman in association with Lock On Files.

Twitch Highlight of the race can be seen here:
The 5th race of the season will be the Maykop 8. Mass start race of up to 12 aircraft at a time going 10 laps around a figure 8 patterned track will keep the action close and exciting. Be sure to check it out next month (21 June 2015).
And thanks to everyone involved to make this race such a success:
Virtual Aerobatics Staff

As we get near our 10th anniversary, I wanted to see were we are in terms of web traffic, SimilarWeb has a free service that does just that. I know that web traffic goes up and down and I haven´t bothered with it for the past year or so, this time it was a pleasant read.

According to our own front page page hit tracker we average 1.3 - 1.7  million page hits a month, that is only one statistic that does not show much more than how many pages are being browsed, SimilarWeb gives a more interesting perspective : http://www.similarwe...lockonfiles.com

What wasn't a surprise is that we no longer follow the developer of DCSW traffic, that has been true since 2007 when we parted our ways : http://www.similarwe...atsimulator.com

I noticed that we get no traffic from the developers of DCSW , congratulations to them for a job well done :D

not being tied to any developer sales popularity has been our goal for many years - our aim has always been to be an independent community website, a goal that was been proven right over the years.

Valve Nixes Paid Skyrim Mods After Huge Backlash

28 Apr 2015
Posted by Tom_Weiss In: LockOnFiles Portal Articles

Never having played Skirim due to lack of time, still this move by Steam is a welcome one. Paid mod making is something very contentious and although no one, including me would mind earning some money from my work, nevertheless , paid mods have a huge impact in the number of mod makers and the quantity of mods released.

Last week, Valve announced that creators of game mods would be able to sell their creations on its Steam service. It didn’t expect the huge backlash, from players and modders alike. On Monday, it pulled down the feature entirely.

“The Steam Workshop has always been a great place for sharing mods, maps, and all kinds of items that you’ve created,” the original announcement read. “Now it’s also a great place for selling those creations.”

Fast forward to this week: “We understand our own game’s communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating,” Valve wrote. “We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there’s a useful feature somewhere here.”

“Even though we had the best intentions, the feedback has been clear—this is not a feature you want,” wrote Bethesda on its blog.

and in case anyone has any doubts who would profit the most from paid mod making :

Those reasons are manifold. Many think that the profit-sharing model is unfair to modders. In the case of Skyrim, 75 percent of the profit from a mod’s sale was split between Valve and Bethesda, with only 25 percent making its way to the mod creator’s pocket.

Valve to allow Mod Makers to sell on Steam

25 Apr 2015
Posted by Tom_Weiss In: LockOnFiles Portal Articles

As you all know, our website exists to support our Community and its Mod makers - and we have been doing it these past ten years.

When we started , Lock On Modern Air Combat was the focus of our interest. Many things changed since then , Mod making is not what it used to be and our focus diversified to include FSX-P3D and DCS.

Now something quite big took place - these news while not directly concerning our community can, in time, have far reaching consequences for our hobby.

Valve has implemented a major change to the Steam Workshop that gives modders the option to sell their creations directly to gamers in an open, unregulated market.

"We think this is a great opportunity to help support the incredible creative work being done by mod makers in the Steam Workshop," said Valve's Tom Bui in a statement. "User generated content is an increasingly significant component of many games, and opening new avenues to help financially support those contributors via Steam Workshop will help drive the level of UGC to new heights

27 Feb 2015

The developers of DCSW posted some interesting news about where they stand in developing new add ons as well as DCSW v2/Edge:

- DCS World 2 and Edge seem to be nearing a public release, in alpha release format.

- DCS: Nevada Test and Training Map is almost finished, it is hard to believe it, but it seems to be true.

- DCS: P-47D Thunderbolt (and not DCS: Spitfire IX) will be released first, the 'when' is not so soon apparently.

- DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Air to Ground radar is progressing well

hopefully after so much waiting we will indeed see some tangible progress and that will makes us all happy.

DCS F/A-18C news

02 Mar 2015
Posted by Tom_Weiss In: LockOnFiles Portal Articles

In an effort to revert some expectations on the progress of their next module - the developers of DCS posted some new info and screenshots of the F-18 cockpit a few days ago , it is good to learn that it is indeed not a mythical module ;)

No, it’s not a myth. Work on the Hornet continues with great progress on the air-to-surface radar. The real beam mapping mode is just about done, and once complete, the team will start work on the various sub-modes. This has been a critical new technology that had to be developed from scratch for this project.
Included in this newsletter is the current status of the 6 DOF cockpit. It is still very much a work-in-progress but project development is now accelerating.
